Senior BJP member and MP of Madhya Pradesh, Indore is unanimously elected as the sixteenth speaker of Lok Sabha. She is the second woman who will take the oath as a speaker after Mira Kumar.
Before the end of the parliamentary session only Sumitra Mahajan’s name was announced for the post of a speaker. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu were once suggested her name. Congress party leader Mallikarjun Kharge, IDMK’s M. Thambidurai, Sudip Banerjee of Trinamool Congress and Party Supreme of Socialist party Mulayam Singh Yadav supported the proposal. Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi also supported the proposal with everyone else in the parliament by striking hand in the table.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the speech after electing the Prime Minister. He congratulated the new Lok Sabha speaker and said it’s a great for a woman being elected as the speaker. He continues to represent the largest democracy in the world. Prime Minister also said, there are at least 315 new faces in this Lok Sabha. It’s an opportunity to form a new history maintaining the tradition.
TMC MP Sudip Banerjee congratulated the newly elected speaker and said, “I am very happy because a female speaker has elected. I hope the speaker will give importance to the facts of opposition.”
Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge also welcomed the new speaker.
72 years-old Sumitra Mahajan has elected MP from Indore for the eight times. This time she won for 4 lakh 67 thousand votes. Sumitra Devi was Lok Sabha MP of Indore from 1989. It is heard M. Thambidurai could get the post of Deputy Speaker. Two-day earlier AIADMK chief Jayalalitha set on a meeting with Narendra Modi in this regard. Thambidurai is the parliamentary leader of AIDMK since last Lok Sabha. He has served as the Deputy Speaker from 1985 to 1989.
